Según los resultados de la Encuesta sobre Alcohol y Drogas en España (EDADES) en 2017, las drogas con mayor prevalencia de consumo en España fueron el alcohol (75.2%) y el tabaco (40.9%). El 69.7% de la población de entre 15 y 64 años había consumido tabaco alguna vez. La edad media de inicio del consumo se sitúa algo antes de los 16,6 años, y el consumo diario se inicia, antes de cumplir los 19. En total se estima que, a lo largo de 2017, aproximadamente 390.000 personas iniciaron su consumo, siendo más frecuente entre los hombres, con independencia de la edad.

Entre los consumidores de tabaco a diario, un 67,1% se han planteado dejar de fumar. La mayoría mujeres. Según el tipo de cigarrillos consumidos, un 77% continúan siendo fieles a los cigarrillos de cajetilla frente al 15,4% que declara consumir tabaco de liar y el 7,6% restante que fuma cigarrillos tanto de liar como de cajetilla. En cuanto a los cigarrillos electrónicos, el 6,8% de la población (7,3% de los hombres y 6,3% de las mujeres) los ha consumido alguna vez en la vida. Respecto a la cantidad de tabaco consumido, aquellos que han fumado en los últimos 30 días han consumido de media 12,5 cigarrillos al día.
En el CARE Bola Azul se ha instalado en la entrada una mesa informativa sobre la prevención y la lucha contra el tabaquismo y se ha hecho entrega de los Premios y Diplomas a los usuarios de los servicios de Salud Mental que han participado en este certamen con motivo del Día Mundial sin Tabaco. Además se han desarrollado actividades similares en los hospitales de Torrecárdenas, Poniente y La Inmaculada, así como en diferentes centros de atención primaria de la provincia.
