Y quedan otros dos millones de rromaníes. Son los que vivimos en España (750.000), en Portugal, sur de Francia e Inglaterra. Los gitanos que viven en estos países han perdido el rromanó, aunque hablan una especie de “idioma” al que en España todo el mundo llama “caló”, y que no es más que un pogadolecto del rromanó. El pionero en dar la batalla en defensa de nuestra lengua desde el ámbito académico es Nicolás Jiménez González. Es precisamente Nicolás Jiménez quien mejor ha definido nuestra peculiar manera de “hablar en gitano”. “El caló no es exactamente un dialecto del rromanó, sino que es un pogadolecto. Este neologismo ha tenido que ser ideado por lingüistas romaníes para definir una categoría de fenómenos lingüísticos que se dan en múltiples lugares del mundo y en muy variados contextos históricos y sociológicos.
Un pogadolecto consiste en un habla cuya estructura gramatical está tomada de una lengua A, en la cual se inserta un léxico procedente de una lengua B. (En la terminología lingüística este tipo de fenómenos se denominan "hablan mixtas"). El caló en España tiene una estructura gramatical propia del español sobre la que se ha insertado el vocabulario rromaní, con algunos préstamos de otras lenguas.” Nicolás Jiménez es el autor de un magnifico manual, titulado “¿Sar sam?”, para el aprendizaje del rromanó estándar, editado por el Instituto de Cultura Gitana.

Debo añadir también el reconocimiento de los esfuerzos realizados por Calos Muñoz Nieto ", otro gitano madrileño, que sigue impartiendo cursos y jornadas de divulgación del rromanó allí donde se le llama. Carlos Muñoz ha sabido interpretar el pensamiento de la nueva juventud gitana cuando ha escrito que “Los gitanos y gitanas de hoy en día nos vemos en el deber moral de reivindicar el derecho a la diferencia lingüística y a exigir medios suficientes para la reimplantación de nuestra lengua al igual que se ha hecho con otros idiomas en todo el estado. Queremos convivir con todas las culturas que nos rodean dentro del respeto y la armonía necesarios, sin tener que olvidar por ello la propia identidad.”

Cuando en abril de 1971, hace 50 años, tuve la gran suerte de participar en Londres en el primer congreso mundial del Pueblo Gitano, recibí tantos impactos vitales que aquel acontecimiento supuso para mí una transformación absoluta del conocimiento que yo mismo tenía del pueblo gitano. Y debo manifestar que mi primera sorpresa fue ver como la mayoría de los participantes, procedentes de una veintena de países de todo el mundo, se entendían perfectamente en una lengua que yo suponía que era una forma avanzada del caló.

Pero no, hablaban en rromanó. Hombres y mujeres cuyas familias habían vivido separados y perseguidos durante siglos. Pero habían conservado las costumbres y tradiciones comunes siendo su principal tesoro la vieja lengua con la que salieron de la lejana India nuestros más remotos antepasados.
Hice un gran esfuerzo para enterarme y participar en los debates que duraron varios días, al tiempo que grababa en un pequeño casete todo lo que allí se decía. Y miré usted por donde, descubrí que muchísimas de las palabras que había grabado no me eran desconocidas y que la mayoría de los verbos “castellanizados” del caló tenían sus raíces en los verbos del rromanó. Todos los participantes fuimos conscientes de la necesidad de trabajar intensamente para garantizar la supervivencia del idioma y de darnos unas reglas muy sencillas que contribuyeran a la estandarización de la lengua. Y ese fue uno de los principales acuerdos tomado por unanimidad por los asistentes.

La consecuencia fue casi inmediata. Marcel Courhiade, un gitano albanés afincado en Francia, se convirtió en el referente más autorizado para los rromaníes que queríamos recuperar o perfeccionar el rromanó. Esto le llevó a ser la figura más relevante del Instituto Nacional de Lenguas y Culturas Orientales de la Universidad La Sorbona de París. Me precio de tener con él la más entrañable amistad. De la misma forma que hoy contamos en España con Seo Cizmich, “Embajador Honorífico de la Lengua Rromaní” y el mejor divulgador, desde sus orígenes, de la “Rromaní Tchib”.

Quiero también rendir homenaje al presidente del Congreso de Londres de 1971 que fue un gitano serbio llamado Slobodan Berbeski, poeta y reconocido político en la época del mariscal Tito. Él fue diputado en la antigua Yugoslavia y cuando tomaba la palabra lo hacía en rromanés porque él representaba a la minoría rromaní de su país compuesta a la sazón por algo más de un millón de personas. George Sarau, uno de los grandes estudiosos del rromanés, desde su tierra natal, Rumanía, dijo que “En Slobodan Berbeski la lengua gitana lleva toda la historia del pueblo rromanó”.
