Las fuentes ornamentales forman parte del patrimonio histórico y cultural de los pueblos y ciudades. Son, en muchos casos, una seña de identidad que nos recuerda también la cultura del agua en nuestro país, probablemente influencia de nuestro pasado árabe.

La ciudad de Almería cuenta con 103 fuentes ornamentales que, repartidas por el término municipal, lo embellecen. Ofrecen frescura y monumentalidad, riqueza artística y, como digo, también patrimonial. Por eso, en el Ayuntamiento tenemos claro que han de estar cuidadas y en perfecto estado de funcionamiento, lo que no siempre es fácil. Para conseguirlo, desde el Área de Servicios Municipales hemos puesto en macha un ambicioso Plan de Mejora y Rehabilitación de Fuentes Ornamentales que, de la mano de la empresa concesionaria del servicio de mantenimiento, ACISA, ha comenzado con la puesta a punto de la emblemática fuente de Los Peces, en el Parque Nicolás Salmerón.
En este parque, con valores históricos, botánicos, artísticos, arquitectónicos, paisajísticos y etnográficos que le han valido la consideración de Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), son cinco las fuentes ornamentales en las que vamos a intervenir, con una inversión de 180.000 euros en una primera fase de este Plan de embellecimiento y puesta a punto.

Son la citada fuente de Los Peces y las de los Hombres del Mar o Monumento a la Marina Española (ubicada a la altura de la calle Arapiles, hacia levante) y la fuente de los Delfines (también frente a la calle Arapiles, pero hacia poniente), las tres con destacados elementos escultóricos. Más las fuentes de la calle Poniente y la que está a la altura de la Puerta del Socorro. En total, cinco que, una vez remozadas, van a convertirse de nuevo, en puntos de visita, referentes en un parque que se convirtió en su día en hito de la transformación urbana de la ciudad y que hoy sigue siendo espacio de encuentro, de recreo, esparcimiento y tránsito agradable. Y más que lo va a ser porque el pulmón verde de nuestro centro urbano merece el máximo cuidado y respeto.

El Plan de Mejora iniciado esta última semana se va a desarrollar a lo largo de los próximos tres meses y medio, de modo que las cinco estarán listas para mediados de septiembre. Y si bien este plan lo hemos centrado, de momento, en las fuentes del Parque Nicolás Salmerón, el objetivo municipal es más ambicioso y prevé ir mejorando todas y cada una de las más de un centenar existentes en el término municipal porque forman parte del encanto y de la idiosincrasia del centro y de nuestros barrios.
