La actuación supondrá la construcción de una estación de autobuses en un municipio que durante los meses de verano cuadruplica su población debido a su carácter eminentemente turístico, según ha recordado la Junta.
Las instalaciones contarán con capacidad para la parada de cuatro autobuses de manera simultánea. Además, dispondrá de un edificio de espera y servicios anexo, así como una parada de taxi y otra de autobuses urbanos en el entorno, para garantizar el acceso de los usuarios y promover la intermodalidad de la actuación.

Más de 40 expediciones de autobuses hacen parada en el municipio almeriense, número que se ve incrementado en algunas rutas en periodo estival, dado el carácter turístico de la comarca. Los autobuses interurbanos hacen parada en varios puntos distribuidos por el término municipal. El principal de ellos se denomina La Fuente y se ubica en la avenida de Andalucía, cerca del cruce con Camino Huertas de las Parras.

El nuevo intercambiador de autobuses se situará, tras un acuerdo entre el Consistorio, la Delegación de Fomento en Almería y la Dirección General de Movilidad de la Junta, en una parcela de titularidad municipal de 5.607 metros cuadrados en la Avenida de Andalucía (AL-6111), que es la vía que conecta el núcleo histórico del municipio con su desarrollo costero.

Además, gozará de buena conexión con la variante de Mojácar y ofrecerá una salida directa a la Autovía del Mediterráneo (A-7). El Ayuntamiento de Mojácar ya aprobó el pasado 24 de junio el proyecto de actuación en este suelo, que actualmente se encuentra en desuso.

La Consejería de Fomento, Infraestructuras y Ordenación del Territorio asume el coste de la obra y se ha encargado de redactar el proyecto técnico, así como de la licitación y ejecución de las obras.
