El Centro Histórico debe ser uno de los ejes fundamentales en la actuación municipal, favoreciendo su revitalización, el fomento del comercio, la rehabilitación de viviendas para evitar su despoblación, regenerando el espacio urbano para su uso y disfrute de los ciudadanos. Pero en lugar de eso nos dedicamos a destruirlo, fomentando un parque temático de parranda, generando ruido por las noches, maltratando los pocos árboles que existen o proyectando su desaparición, como el intento con los árboles de la Plaza Vieja, vaciándolo de su contenido simbólico, como el traslado del Pingurucho o llenando sus calles y plazas de un mosaico de pavimentos duros, donde solo destacan formas y colorines.

Hace años que se pretendía adquirir el edificio del antiguo Correos. La justificación era utilizarlo como un contenedor cultural para la dinamización del centro, llenarlo de actividades dirigidas a todas las edades y conseguir un uso intensivo del edificio. Y con estas pretensiones y objetivos se adquirió el compromiso por parte del anterior alcalde, respaldado por todos los grupos políticos, para su compra y utilización. Ahora ese compromiso se ve traicionado.
El Polo de Innovación Agrícola es sin duda una gran iniciativa, su ubicación en el centro de la ciudad no tanto. Para esos menesteres tenemos el Parque Científico Tecnológico de Almería, que se creó para albergar las iniciativas relacionadas con el desarrollo de futuros servicios en tecnología e innovación, con el apoyo de la Universidad de Almería. Además, está situado junto a la Autovía del Mediterráneo, muy cerca de El Toyo y en medio del campo de invernaderos. Esta debería ser la ubicación natural del nuevo Polo de Innovación Agroalimentaria.

El edificio de correos se adquiere “a ciegas” a mediados de octubre de 2021, tras unas largas negociaciones, por un importe de algo más de un millón de euros. Una semana después de su adquisición, la concejala y los técnicos de Urbanismo visitan por primera vez el edificio. Este edificio se abandonó por Correos hace unos 10 años por unos problemas de aluminosis; se supone que debe haber un informe al respecto, pero el Ayuntamiento, antes de su compra, no disponía de dicha información.

Sin más elementos de comprobación y con la creencia generalizada de que el edificio es horroroso, fundada en opiniones estereotipadas, el certificado de defunción del inmueble recién adquirido estaba asegurado, sin ningún otro tipo de análisis crítico. De esta manera perdemos una edificación de 3.800 m² y añadimos un millón de euros más al precio del solar, es decir: tenemos un suelo por más de 2 millones de euros ¡Un negocio redondo!

Es muy difícil adaptar la edificación actual a las necesidades de una infraestructura ultra moderna y tecnologizada. Pero su adaptación para un contenedor cultural es perfectamente factible, con un coste sensiblemente inferior y con unos beneficios sociales para el común de los almerienses muy superiores. Ejemplos de nuevas edificaciones megamodenas con importantes inversiones que luego quedan relegadas al ostracismo, tenemos unos cuantos. Obras de adaptación de edificaciones antiguas para dotarlas de nuevos usos también, y generalmente con mayor incidencia y éxito en su futuro funcionamiento. Las primeras son más vistosas para el relumbrón de políticos cortos de miras, mientras que las segundas pasarán más desapercibidas, pero son sin duda más modestas y efectivas.
