El carguero de mineral El Alquife nació en 1902 como respuesta a la necesidad de poder transportar el hierro que llegaba a la estación de tren de Almería hasta los barcos desde los que se distribuía por toda Europa.
Popularmente conocido como El Cable Inglés, esta construcción de hierro que se adentra en la playa de las Almadrabillas puede considerarse una auténtica superviviente. En la actualidad se encuentra en la segunda fase de un proceso de rehabilitación que se inició hace más de dos décadas y que ha sufrido múltiples altibajos.

La última adversidad con la que ha tenido que lidiar el Cable Inglés fue el accidente de tráfico que se produjo el pasado mes de agosto y que provocó que una grúa golpease la estructura del muelle carguero. Por fortuna, no se produjeron desperfectos considerables en una obra que fue declarada Monumento Histórico Artístico en 1984 y, más tarde, en 1998, Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).
El Cable Inglés se ha integrado en el paisaje urbano de Almería hasta lograr ganarse las simpatías tanto de los almerienses como de los visitantes, que no dejan de sorprenderse ante esta impresionante obra, perfecto ejemplo de la Arquitectura de Hierro en Andalucía.

Con el Cable Inglés no sucede como con los false friends, esas expresiones inglesas que suenan parecidas a otras españolas, pero que, en realidad, no tienen nada que ver. En el caso del muelle almeriense, la acepción “inglés” no engaña.
En el siglo XIX, fueron muchas las regiones costeras de Andalucía que tuvieron una importante influencia inglesa debido a las inversiones que varias empresas del Reino Unido realizaron en la zona para explotar diversos recursos naturales, por ejemplo, las minas. Esta “revolución industrial” no solo supuso la creación de múltiples puestos de trabajo, sino que también conllevó la construcción de diversas infraestructuras, no solo fábricas o alojamientos para los trabajadores, sino también puertos y ferrocarriles.

Cuando se habla de legado británico en Andalucía, siempre se destaca el que ha quedado en la provincia de Huelva, ya que, especialmente por la industria conservera, allí tuvo un gran peso el empresariado inglés del siglo XIX. Pero también en Almería hubo una importante colonia británica en la época.
A finales del siglo XIX, se puso en marcha la línea de ferrocarril entre Linares y Almería. Ante este hecho, la compañía británica The Alquife Mines and Railways Co. Ltd, que se encargaba de la explotación de las minas de la localidad granadina de Alquife, solicitó la construcción de un cargadero de mineral en Almería que solventase el problema que se generaba cuando se quería embarcar el hierro para su distribución por mar.

Pero esta construcción no es la única herencia de esa colonia inglesa que se asentó en Almería a principios de siglo XX. La actividad marítima y comercial, que incluía la exportación de frutas y verduras, atrajo a una población británica que incluso llegó a tener su propio cementerio.

El poco conocido Cementerio Inglés se abrió en 1877 y fue una concesión a la corona británica. Hasta hace apenas unos años, este cementerio se consideraba territorio británico, y fue propiedad del Reino Unido hasta hace bien poco. En él están enterrados varios personajes notables, no solo ingleses, sino también de otras nacionalidades.

Entre el siglo XIX y XX, las minas de Alquife eran las mayores productoras de hierro de España. Sin embargo, el material quedaba “atascado” en el puerto de Almería, ya que se necesitaban más de 300 trabajadores, con jornadas de 10 horas, para poder embarcar apenas mil toneladas. De ahí la necesidad de crear un sistema que permitiese cargar el hierro directamente de los vagones de tren a los barcos.
El estudio arquitectónico Alexander Finlay Co. de Escocia, que era donde se encontraba la sede de la compañía a cargo de la explotación minera, fue el encargado de la construcción del carguero. Un proyecto que bebía directamente del trabajo que estaba haciendo en París el ingeniero Gustave Eiffel.

Las obras del Cable Inglés empezaron en 1902 y se puso a funcionar en 1904, después de que fuera inaugurado por el rey Alfonso XIII. Durante décadas, hasta 1970, el cargadero cumplió su función, aunque desde 1916 le hiciera competencia el Alquife Wharf n.º 2 o Cable Francés.

Tras años de olvido, la declaración de la obra como BIC en 1998 volvió a despertar el interés en el Cable Inglés, pero, aun así, se han tardado décadas en hacer efectiva su rehabilitación. La idea es que, cuando se finalicen todas las intervenciones, con una tercera fase que incluirá la habilitación de accesos como ascensores, este monumento vuelva a servir a la ciudad de Almería, ahora como espacio cultural y de ocio.
