La causa detonante del desprendimiento se atribuye a una serie de movimientos sísmicos que tuvieron lugar en el Mar de Alborán con una magnitud de 2,5 en la escala Richter y a escasa profundidad. Esto, ligado a la avanzada meteorización del talud, ha hecho que se genere un movimiento de grandes dimensiones, y que, pese a la existencia de elementos de contención compuestos por mallas de triple torsión que han minimizado los daños, no ha podido ser evitado en su totalidad.
El alcalde de Pulpí, Juan Pedro García, ha querido "agradecer la rapidez de respuesta en la ejecución de las actuaciones por parte de la Junta de Andalucía, y confiamos en que las obras puedan estar finalizadas en la mayor brevedad posible y de esta forma, se reanude el tráfico con normalidad para todas aquellas personas que frecuentan el tramo desde San Juan de los Terreros a Pulpí".
