El Ayuntamiento trabaja en incorporar al Plan de Movilidad Urbana Sostenible la delimitación de la Zona de Bajas Emisiones directas de CO2 en cumplimiento de lo dispuesto en el artículo 14 de la 7/2021, 20 mayo, de cambio climático y transición energética, una medida de mitigación que permita reducir las emisiones derivadas de la movilidad y promueva un modelo de circulación más sostenible.
La Junta de Gobierno ha aprobado la propuesta de ZBE que queda delimitada por el siguiente trazado: calles Octavio Augusto, Colombia, Pablo Neruda, Barcelona, Almirante, Dos Hermanas, Cervantes e Iglesia hasta intersección con Bulevar de El Ejido. En su interior se incluyen las calles Lobero, Cervantes, Jacinto Benavente, Circunvalación del Mercado, Álvarez de Castro, Vizcaíno Márquez, Barcelona (primer tramo), Constantino, Donato Bramante, Julio Cesar (primer tramo) y Río Júcar (primer tramo).

Posteriormente, se iniciará el proceso participativo previsto en el artículo 101.5 la Ley 2/2011 de Economía Sostenible, dando voz a los ciudadanos y agentes implicados en la movilidad urbana. Se trata del trámite que tiene que seguir el Ayuntamiento para su implantación antes de que finalice 2023, al igual que todas las localidades de España cuya población sea superior a los 50.000 habitantes.

El Ayuntamiento de El Ejido limitará el acceso a la ZBE establecida a vehículos que carecen de distintivo medio ambiental de la DGT, es decir, vehículos de gasolina con matriculación previa al año 2000 y vehículos diésel con matriculación previa al 2006. Además, se establecen posibles excepciones a la limitación de acceso a la ZBE para vehículos de reparto de mercancías; vehículos de personas con movilidad reducida; vehículos históricos (con más de 30 años y catalogado como por la DGT); vehículos de residentes empadronados en el interior de la ZBE; y motocicletas y ciclomotores.

Se entiende por Zona de Baja Emisión el ámbito delimitado por la Administración Pública dentro de su territorio, de carácter continuo, y en el que se aplican restricciones de acceso, circulación y estacionamiento de vehículos para mejorar la calidad del aire y mitigar las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, conforme a la clasificación de los vehículos por su nivel de emisiones de acuerdo con lo establecido en el Reglamento General de Vehículos vigente. Por tanto, se trata esencialmente de un cambio en la regulación en el entorno urbano para potenciar un cambio en el modelo de movilidad, con mejoras para los modos más sostenibles.
