Cada año, cerca de 150 militares españoles contribuyen a la coalición internacional para adiestrar y capacitar a las fuerzas de seguridad iraquíes en su lucha contra el Daesh, un apoyo que se ha ofrecido desde 2014. Esta semana, se han estado preparando militares de la Comandancia General de Ceuta en el Campo de Maniobras y Tiro Álvarez de Sotomayor de Almería, para formar parte del contingente A/I XVIII, que se desplegará en mayo en el marco de la operación Inherent Resolve.

Esta operación también incluye el asesoramiento del gobierno de Irak en el ámbito de la estructura de seguridad nacional, así como la formación de su sistema educativo profesional militar, como parte de la misión de la OTAN en Irak (NMI). Los soldados españoles no están asignados a tareas de combate directo con insurgentes del Daesh, Al Qaeda u otros grupos insurrectos presentes en la zona.
Actualmente, los instructores españoles se encuentran en el Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, donde están formando unidades del servicio contraterrorista iraquí (CTS) con el apoyo de los miembros de la Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (SOTG) de la Coalición.

Además, los soldados de la Task Force Toro (Unidad de Helicópteros) están desplegados en la base aérea de Al Asad, y su principal misión es ofrecer transporte aéreo para las tropas de la Coalición, con helicópteros Chinook y Cougar.

El Gobierno español autorizó el despliegue de Fuerzas Armadas en Irak a través del Pleno del Congreso de los Diputados el 22 de octubre. Esta colaboración se enmarca en la Misión de la OTAN en Irak (NMI, por sus siglas en inglés) para contribuir a la seguridad y combatir el terrorismo junto a otros países aliados. Esta misión tendrá una duración de seis meses, aunque el Gobierno podrá prorrogar el despliegue si así lo solicita la coalición.
