De este modo, la economía española conserva su perfil de exportadora neta de productos agroalimentarios, con más de dos décadas ininterrumpidas de superávit comercial. Sin embargo, y por primera vez en quince años, el superávit del sector agroalimentario español cae un 24,5 % en 2022 hasta situarse en los 14.007 millones de euros. Es una disminución que se explica por el intenso aumento en el valor de las importaciones, en un año marcado por la subida de los precios. La tasa de crecimiento de los precios ha alcanzado niveles preocupantes en 2022. Los elevados costes de adquisición a los que se ha enfrentado el sector (energía, fertilizantes, pesticidas, pienso para ganado, etc.) han desencadenado un proceso inflacionario de los alimentos y bebidas no alcohólicas hasta alcanzar una tasa del 15,7 % en España y del 17,8 % en la UE-27, muy por encima de los niveles de 2021.

El empleo en el sector crece un 1 % en 2022, lo que supone 22.881 ocupados más que en 2021 hasta alcanzar 2.347.108 de trabajadores. El buen comportamiento del empleo en la industria de la transformación (3,1 %) y la comercialización (2,4 %) amortiguan la caída del sector primario, que pierde un 2,5 % interanual. En su conjunto, el sector ocupa al 11,4 % de los trabajadores del país, también por encima de la media europea (10,5 %).
Uno de los rasgos característicos del mercado de trabajo agroalimentario en el conjunto de la Unión Europea sigue siendo el envejecimiento de la fuerza laboral y, muy especialmente, en la actividad primaria. En España, el 86,1 % de los jefes de explotaciones agrarias son mayores de 45 años, frente al 80 % de la media europea. Especialmente crítico es el tramo de mayores de 65 años, que concentra el 41,3 % de los mismos.

Retos pendientes

Teniendo en cuenta las tendencias cambiantes de la economía mundial, el sector agroalimentario en su conjunto afronta muchos desafíos, como la transformación digital de toda la cadena de valor (para ahorrar recursos en beneficio del cambio climático); la producción de alimentos saludables, sabrosos y sostenibles; garantizar la seguridad alimentaria; transitar hacia modelos de alimentación circulares más sostenibles; luchar en favor de la igualdad de género, y enfrentarse al reto del envejecimiento del empleo del sector (el 41 % de los titulares de explotaciones agrarias tiene más de 65 años), entre otros.
Según se destaca en el informe, todos ellos se afrontan desde una posición de relativa fortaleza dada la elevada productividad y competitividad del sector. A pesar de ello, se insiste en la necesidad de mejorar aún más su posicionamiento, siendo necesario para ello aumentar el esfuerzo innovador (inversión en I+D+i), sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que es inferior a la media europea.
