La poda natural es una de esas modas que han surgido en los últimos años y que pretenden ser más ecológicas y respetuosas con el medio ambiente. Sin embargo, para muchos ciudadanos de Almería, la poda natural no es más que una excusa para dejar crecer los árboles sin control y sin atender a las necesidades de los vecinos. Según la empresa contratada a tal efecto, la poda natural consiste en "eliminar solo las ramas que suponen un riesgo para la seguridad o la salud de las personas o que interfieren con el mobiliario urbano, el alumbrado público o las fachadas de los edificios". Es decir, que solo se cortan las ramas que molestan, y el resto se deja tal cual. Así, se supone que se respeta el crecimiento natural de los árboles y se favorece su desarrollo, aunque la pregunta es quién y cómo se decide qué ramas molestan.
Pero lo que la empresa llama poda natural, muchos vecinos lo llaman abandono y dejadez, porque esa es la imagen que transmiten unos árboles de copa inmensa y ramas caídas por el peso. Y es que hay zonas de la ciudad donde los árboles llevan años sin recibir una poda adecuada, y sus ramas invaden las aceras, las calles e incluso las viviendas. Es el caso del Paseo de Almería, donde ahora se va a realizar una poda natural, después de muchas quejas y reclamaciones. Los vecinos denuncian que los árboles les quitan la luz, les ensucian las ventanas y les impiden abrir las persianas. Algunos incluso han tenido que cortar ellos mismos las ramas que entraban por sus balcones.

Pero no solo el Paseo de Almería sufre esta situación. En mi calle, los árboles también han estado un lustro sin podar, y solo vinieron a hacerle una "poda natural" después de mucha insistencia. Y claro, solo cortaron cuatro ramas que se metían en los dormitorios, y ya estamos casi igual. Las hojas caen constantemente sobre los coches aparcados, como los excrementos de los pájaros que anidan allí, y las raíces levantan las baldosas de la acera.

Y qué decir de la carretera que va hacia el Parque del Boticario, donde los árboles llevan como mínimo 20 años sin podar (se puede comprobar en el histórico de Google Maps), recortados solo por el paso de los camiones porque las ramas altas llegan a la mitad de la vía. Allí, la poda natural la hacen los propios vehículos, que arrancan las ramas más bajas al pasar. Esto provoca que los vecinos tengamos que meternos en plena noche por la calzada, a riesgo de que nos pille un coche, cuando vamos a tirar la basura, porque es imposible pasar bajo sus ramas, que casi tocan el suelo.

Como dijo el escritor José Saramago: "Los árboles son nuestros hermanos mayores". Y como tales, merecen nuestro respeto y nuestro cuidado. Pero también merecemos respeto y cuidado nosotros, los ciudadanos, que pagamos nuestros impuestos y queremos vivir en una ciudad limpia y ordenada. La poda natural no puede ser una excusa para ahorrar dinero o para no hacer nada. La poda natural tiene que ser una forma de mejorar la convivencia entre los árboles y las personas.
Lo natural es que poden, sí. Pero que poden bien.
