El Programa de detección de cáncer de mama del Distrito Sanitario Almería está compuesto por una unidad administrativa para gestionar y citar a la población diana, así como de un equipo técnico para realizar las pruebas diagnósticas, que se ampliara con la puesta en funcionamiento del nuevo mamógrafo. El cáncer de mama es el tumor maligno más frecuente en las mujeres andaluzas. El programa de detección precoz consiste en la realización de mamografías cada 2 años a la población femenina residente en Andalucía invitada. Las mujeres son citadas mediante carta que reciben en su domicilio para acudir a una Unidad de exploración mamográfica específica en donde se hacen dos placas por mama. El resultado lo recibe la interesada por correo y en el caso de que deba ser derivada al hospital para completar el estudio o para realizar algún tipo de tratamiento también recibirá dicha cita por correo.
