El Ayuntamiento de Vícar y los principales edificios municipales se iluminarán hoy de color rojo, atendiendo así al llamamiento de la Asociación Española de Hemocromatosis para dar visibilidad a esta enfermedad, desconocida para muchos, pero que afecta a una de cada mil personas en nuestro país. Con esta iniciativa el Ayuntamiento quiere ofrecer su apoyo al colectivo de personas afectadas por esta enfermedad, que afecta a la sangre y que, cuando no es debidamente tratada, puede ocasionar serios problemas a los pacientes. Las complicaciones más frecuentes de este cuadro clínico son cirrosis hepática, diabetes mellitus, artritis, miocardiopatía e hipogonadismo o disminución de las funciones sexuales.

Padecer algún tipo de hemocromatosis, término que describe la sobrecarga progresiva y potencialmente grave de hierro, tiene como consecuencia el daño en órganos vitales. La hemocromatosis puede deberse a enfermedades genéticas que afectan a la capacidad de absorción del hierro, o bien tratarse de pacientes que sufren de anemia crónica, en los que el exceso de hierro se debe al depósito paulatino del metal procedente de transfusiones repetidas.

En el caso de la hemocromatosis hereditaria, los síntomas iniciales, que incluyen fatiga generalizada, dolor articular y abdominal, pérdida de peso y disminución del apetito sexual, son muy sutiles y poco específicos. Respecto a la hemocromatosis secundaria o adquirida, si bien la sintomatología es similar a la de la hemocromatosis hereditaria, suele existir una afectación cardíaca más severa en forma de insuficiencia cardíaca, o arritmias, que puede causar incluso la muerte.
