Desde su llegada a la Universidad de Almería en 1998, Manuel Berenguel ha sido fundamental para el crecimiento del área de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Automática en el sureste español. Fundó el grupo 'Automática, Robótica y Mecatrónica', que ha colocado a la universidad y a Almería en un lugar prominente tanto a nivel nacional como internacional dentro del control de procesos.

A lo largo de su carrera académica, Berenguel ha mantenido una estrecha relación con el Comité Español de Automática. Manuel Berenguel es ingeniero industrial (1992) y doctor ingeniero industrial con Premio Extraordinario (1996) por la Universidad de Sevilla. Su investigación abarca áreas como modelado, control automático e inteligencia artificial aplicados al nexo agua-energía, agricultura, biotecnología y arqueología. Además, ha innovado en métodos docentes mediante herramientas interactivas y laboratorios virtuales.
