Una reciente evaluación paneuropea ha revelado datos alarmantes sobre el impacto del cambio climático en la mortalidad relacionada con la temperatura, que podrían tener repercusiones significativas para la provincia de Almería. Según el estudio, incluso si se logran limitar las políticas climáticas actuales a un aumento de 3 °C en la temperatura global, se prevé un incremento del 13,5% en las muertes relacionadas con la temperatura, lo que equivaldría a unas 55.000 muertes adicionales al año para finales de este siglo.

El análisis, dirigido y coescrito por científicos del Centro Común de Investigación (JRC), abarca 1.368 regiones europeas en 30 países, incluyendo España. En este contexto, Almería podría verse afectada por un aumento considerable de muertes relacionadas con el calor, dado que las proyecciones indican que las regiones del sur de Europa serán las más perjudicadas. En el caso de nuestra provincia, hablamos de más de 38 muertos más de los que habitualmente producen por esta causa ya, aunque afortunadamente no es la que estaría en peor situación ya que Jaen alcanzaría los 50, Granada casi los 41, Córdoba más de 40, Sevilla algo más de 39, Málaga más de 30, Cádiz 33, y Huelva será la menos perjudicada, con más de 28.

Actualmente, las muertes relacionadas con el frío son aproximadamente 2,5 veces más frecuentes en el este que en el oeste; sin embargo, las muertes por calor son más de seis veces más comunes en el sur que en el norte. Esto plantea una preocupación especial para Almería y su clima cálido y seco, donde los veranos ya son intensos.

Los datos reflejan que a nivel estatal, la carga total atribuible a temperaturas extremas asciende a 407.000 muertes al año. De estas, alrededor de 363.500 corresponden al frío y 43.700 al calor excesivo. Sin embargo, se espera que esta tendencia cambie con el tiempo: bajo un aumento proyectado de 4 °C, las muertes relacionadas con el calor podrían triplicarse y llevar a una proporción preocupante de 2,6 muertes por calor frente a cada muerte por frío.
Los principales factores detrás de este cambio son tanto los cambios climáticos como demográficos. La población envejecida y una mayor vulnerabilidad al calor extremo aumentarán el riesgo de mortalidad en comunidades como las de Almería.
