Para revertir esta situación, el alcalde, Francisco Góngora; el presidente de la JUAPA, Manuel García Quero; y en representación de la UTE, José Vicente Colomina, han formalizado el convenio para instalar una planta piloto que permita el ensayo de tecnologías de ósmosis inversa novedosas que logren la reducción de la concentración de sales (reducción de conductividad), reduciendo al mismo tiempo el consumo energético comparado con membranas convencionales. Con esta planta piloto, desarrollada por Aqualia, se podrá determinar la técnica más idónea desde el punto de vista técnico y económico para resolver la problemática.

El sistema piloto tiene capacidad para tratar hasta 20 m3/hora. Está previsto que se instale en la EDAR de El Ejido en agosto y esté durante 8 meses, hasta marzo 2026, probando tecnologías y modos de operación de ósmosis inversa para dar con la configuración más adecuada a instalar en base a las características del agua regenerada que necesita la zona.
Góngora ha relatado que “este convenio marca un paso clave en la lucha contra la escasez crónica de agua en la provincia al promover el uso de agua regenerada. Esto impacta directamente en el medio ambiente, ya que reemplaza las extracciones de acuíferos en el Poniente Almeriense”. Además, el agua regenerada no está sujeta a restricciones, lo que es crucial en sequías prolongadas.
