Hace aproximadamente cinco millones y medio de años, el mar Mediterráneo experimentó un proceso de desecación casi total, un fenómeno conocido como la Crisis de Salinidad del Messiniense. Este evento geológico se extendió durante cerca de un millón de años y resultó en la formación de vastos depósitos de sales que, en algunas áreas, superan los cientos de metros de espesor. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que la desecación del Mediterráneo no fue únicamente consecuencia del cese en la conexión con el océano Atlántico. La investigación revela que la cuenca de Sorbas se desconectó parcialmente del Mediterráneo mientras se formaban los yesos debido a una combinación de factores. Este estudio resalta cómo los procesos climáticos globales pueden tener repercusiones a nivel local, afectando significativamente tanto a paisajes como a ecosistemas. La investigación ha sido financiada por proyectos del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (GYPCLIMATE), así como por contratos Ramón y Cajal y ayudas PPIT-UAL proporcionadas por la Junta de Andalucía-FEDER.
